Ahmadinejad says not supporting any presidential candidate
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he will go to the
presidential elections, and cast his vote just like every other
voter, Fars news agency reported.
"Me and my government don't support any presidential candidate. I
have only one vote and I will use it, just like everyone else," the
president told journalists at the airport of Iran's Khuzestan
province.
Ahmadinejad himself, who has been Iran's president twice, is not
part of the presidential race this year. The country is getting
ready to hold the elections on June 14.
Previously, Ahmadinejad was supporting his close ally Esfandiar
Rahim Mashaei, who was not approved by the country's Guardian
Council for participating in the elections.
Iran's Guardian Council approved the names of eight candidates for
the election, banning Rahim Mashaei and Former President Akbar
Hashemi Rafsanjani from the race.
Yesterday, one of the candidates, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel withdrew
his candidacy from the presidential race, thus there are seven
presidential candidates remaining: Secretary of Expediency Council
Mohsen Rezaei, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed
Jalili, former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati, Tehran Mayor
Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, President of the Strategic Research Center
of the Expediency Council Hassan Rohani, former First Vice
President Mohammad-Reza Aref, and former Telecommunications
Minister Mohammad Gharazi.
