Armenia ex-PM to join presidential election race

Armenian former Prime Minister, an MP from the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress, Hrant Bagratyan, on Thursday announced his candidacy for the presidency, Trend news agency reported.

"I believe that the presence of a candidate with liberal ideology at the upcoming elections is required. However, I would like to inform you that if Levon Ter-Petrosyan nominates his candidacy, I will renounce my idea to run for president (if my candidacy will be nominated). Please taking into account that I will not be nominated from the Armenian National Congress," a statement says.

Presidential elections will be held in Armenia on Feb.18, 2013. Nominations of presidential candidates in Armenia will begin on Dec.25 and last till Jan.4. The deadline for registration of candidates is set from Jan.4 to 14, the pre-election campaign will begin on Jan.21 and will run until 24:00, Feb.16.

Incumbent Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan is the main favorite of the upcoming elections. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia officially nominated Sargsyan's candidacy on Dec.15.

After Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan refused to run for president, the incumbent president has no serious rivals, analysts say.
