Tensions between Israel and Turkiye have intensified following an Israeli airstrike on a Syrian military airbase, deepening concerns that growing rivalry between the two countries could add another dangerous front to an already volatile Middle East.

Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria on August 18, saying the operation was intended to prevent what it described as an expansion of Turkish military activity in Syria. Israeli officials argued that Turkiye’s reported plans to deploy military assets at the facility could threaten Israel’s security. Turkiye, however, rejected the allegations and condemned the strike.

The incident has also exposed a growing divide within Israeli public debate. Some Israeli commentators have portrayed Turkiye as an emerging strategic threat and argued that Tel-Aviv should take a firm military stance against Ankara. The Jerusalem Post, for example, published commentary describing Israel’s action as necessary to prevent a potential confrontation with Turkish forces.

Others, however, have warned that escalating tensions with Turkiye could produce the opposite of the intended result. Critics have questioned whether military action was necessary at a time when Turkiye was reportedly reducing parts of its military presence in northern Syria. They have also argued that diplomatic channels should be exhausted before military force is used against a NATO member and a close U.S. ally.

The dispute has therefore moved beyond the question of a single Syrian airbase. It has raised broader concerns about whether Israel and Turkiye are entering a prolonged strategic confrontation over Syria.

Some Israeli writers have gone further, suggesting that domestic political considerations may also be influencing the government's approach. With elections approaching, they argue that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could benefit politically from portraying Turkiye as a new external security threat. Such claims remain political interpretations rather than established facts.

The controversy comes as Syria seeks greater stability and closer ties with regional and Western partners. Washington, meanwhile, is attempting to prevent further escalation and has promoted mechanisms designed to reduce the risk of clashes among Israel, Turkiye and Syria.

For Turkiye, the episode represents a significant shift in the regional security environment. Ankara has repeatedly said it does not seek a military confrontation with Israel and has emphasized its support for Syria’s territorial integrity and stabilization.

The central question now is whether the latest escalation will remain a limited dispute over military deployments in Syria or develop into a broader confrontation between two major regional powers. With the Middle East already facing multiple conflicts, further deterioration in Israel-Turkiye relations could carry consequences well beyond Syria.
