Abuse in Armenian military posted online
BAKU – A video showing that torture is widespread in the Armenian military has been posted on the popular video sharing website YouTube.
The amateur recording clearly shows a serviceman abusing and insulting two young soldiers. The serviceman of higher rank first pulls the soldiers’ ears, then slaps them on the face and pours water onto their necks, Armenian media reported.
The arbitrariness in the country’s armed forces has caused public outcry.
The recording was of substandard quality, which did not allow to see the servicemen’s faces or to determine whether or not they were speaking the Armenian language. But the footage shows that the servicemen wore uniforms of the Armenian military.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry charged that the video had been posted online to discredit and sally the image of the Armenian armed forces.
Armenian efforts have led to the withdrawal of the video from YouTube.
