Medvedev: Turkey-Armenia deal ‘good example’ of US-Russian co-op
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev meeting US
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday praised US-Russian
efforts to broker an agreement on mending ties between Turkey and
Armenia, signed at the weekend, saying the deal was "a good example
of our cooperation."
Medvedev, hosting Clinton at a residence outside Moscow, said the work done by her, jointly with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in Zurich, Switzerland – where two protocols were signed by the Turkish and Armenian governments – had symbolic importance.
"You and esteemed Lavrov undertook a daunting task in the signing of the Turkey-Armenia protocols. I think their signing is a good example of our cooperation on international issues.
"There are complicated issues in the international arena that need to be urgently resolved. We concur on holding open talks on the Middle East problem, Iran and North Korea nuclear programs and other matters," the Russian leader said.
Clinton noted that 16 US-Russian taskforces have been set up to deal with various issues. "We are looking to develop and deepen our strategic partnership with Russia."
Turkey and Armenia signed a historic agreement to establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders on Saturday in a bid to end decades of hostility. The signing was attended by the top foreign policy diplomats of the U.S. and Russia, along with the French and Swiss foreign ministers, as well as the European Union representative for the South Caucasus.
The documents are to pass the two countries’ parliaments to be considered valid.*
