Armenia may set up military bases in Russia, reports say
Armenia may station two military bases in Russia, the Yerevan-based media claimed.
Armenian military presence in Russia is allegedly possible in accord with the agreement on creating collective prompt-response forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states, the reports quoted the Moscow-led ex-Soviet military bloc`s headquarters as saying.
The initiative aims to station limited military contingent to guard transport infrastructure. The bases are reportedly to be located in a residential area of Russia`s Krasnodar province and the republic of Daghestan.
The sources also said the issue is under broad discussion in the two countries` military circles.
The countries included in the CSTO, the military arm of CIS, signed a document on establishing a common military on February 4.
The CSTO, which was set up in October 2002, groups Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Azerbaijan turned down membership in the group.
The bloc aims to preserve the territorial integrity of its member countries, coordinate the fight against international terror, drug trafficking and organized crime, and to provide immediate military aid to a CSTO member in the event of a military threat.
The common army aims to serve these purposes.
