A copper mine has collapsed in southeast Turkey on Thursday, killing 4 workers and trapping 15 others inside, Turkish media reported.

The privately-owned mine near the town of Sirvan, in Siirt province caved in following a landslide in the region, the private NTV television said.

Several ambulances and rescue teams were dispatched to the area and rescuers recovered the bodies of three miners, NTV said.

The miners were working the night shift at the time of the collapse.

In 2014, 301 miners were killed in a fire inside a coal mine in Soma, western Turkey — the nation's worst mining disaster. The tragedy exposed poor safety standards and superficial government inspections in Turkey's mines.

00:27 (GMT+4) A landslide hit a mine in the southeastern province of Siirt on Thursday, reportedly trapping 14 workers underground, Daily Sabah reported.

Ambulances rushed to the scene. No casualties have been reported yet.

Local sources stated that construction equipment were also stranded underground along with the workers.

Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) has implemented a crisis management desk for the incident.
