Over 4,000 still missing
4,210 people are registered in Azerbaijan as missing
persons, and 1,396 others are reported as those released from
captivity or were once held hostage.
The data was cited in a report assessing the work of the State Commission on Captives, Hostages and Missing Persons and a relevant taskforce throughout 2008.
The Commission said that as a result of the scrutiny conducted last year, the fate of 162 missing persons had been determined. 57 of those individuals were safe and sound, while 45 of them were killed in battles with Armenia during the early 1990s, identified and buried by their loved ones. The names of 60 of those persons were repeatedly cited in the list, the research revealed.
Additionally, 18 people were found to have gone missing during the Garabagh war. Four Azerbaijanis captured by Armenia, including a civilian, were repatriated in 2008. Also, the dead body of an Azerbaijani soldier who fell during a ceasefire violation by the Armenian troops near the frontline Fizuli district was handed over to his family members.
Azerbaijan repatriated five Armenian servicemen and one civilian last year.
