US stepping up energy co-op with Azerbaijan after Georgia unrest
The latest developments in the region have prompted the United States to cooperate with Azerbaijan more closely in the energy sector, US ambassador in Baku Anne Derse has said.
She told the press Wednesday that the White House was currently interested in increasing alternative sources of energy resources and routes for their transportation.
Russia`s latest military incursion in Georgia in August has heightened tension in the volatile region. The brief war between the two countries had caused suspension of vital supplies of oil and gas to European markets via routes crossing Georgia.
Derse emphasized that strengthening the security of oil and gas pipelines is part of the dialog on energy cooperation between Washington and Baku.
"The friendship ties between the U.S. and Azerbaijan are indeed of tremendous importance. These bonds bring to the fore the importance of exploring alternate sources of energy. Such sources are supplying Europe and world markets as a whole. This is also one of the key factors for consumer nations," she said, adding that work will be stepped up in this area.*
