Hungarian exports to Azerbaijan increased by 29 percent during 2013, Hungarian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations said.

Peter Szijjarto told the local media that the next meeting of the Azerbaijani-Hungarian economic commission, which he has headed since July 2012, will be held in late January.

"The most important element of the government's strategy on "opening" the East for Hungary is the further encouragement of economic ties with the Caucasus region," he said. "The next meeting of the joint economic commission, which will be held in Azerbaijan on January 27-28, will be dedicated to this objective. The main topics will be bilateral relations, cooperation in the field of education, tourism, and visa regime."

Szijjarto also referred to the opening of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce in Hungary in Baku in 2012.

The countries' bilateral ties has only included Hungarian exports so far, the volume of which amounted to $54.2 million in the first 10 months of 2013, which is 28.5 percent higher compared the same period in 2012.

Moreover, the fourth meeting of the Azerbaijani-Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation will be held in Baku on January 27-28. The delegation headed by Szijjarto plans to hold several meetings during his visit to Azerbaijan.

A forum with the participation of business people from the two countries will also be held in Baku as part of the meeting.

Hungary recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in April 1992.

Azerbaijani-Hungarian relations are at a high level and based on friendship and mutual interests. High-level relations pave the way for the development of cooperation in economics and other fields.

Moreover, Azerbaijan and Hungary have great opportunities for the expansion of economic cooperation, establishment of relations between the players of the securities market, and exchange of experience and knowledge in this sector.
