Pollution significantly decreases in Caspian Sea: minister

Despite the growth in production volumes, the Caspian Sea's pollution level has decreased considerably, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Minister, Huseyngulu Baghirov told journalists on November 21.

He said the traditional technology used in the Soviet period is not currently used in the cleaning of the Caspian Sea's waters.

The minister said that the only source of the Caspian Sea's pollution is leakages from the wells along the sea's bottom that are left from the Soviet period.

"This problem is also present near the Oil Rocks (an industrial settlement in Baku). However, despite the growth in production, pollution has decreased enormously. This on account of modern technology being used," the minister said.

Baghirov also noted that some organisations which do not have any ratings, for political reasons include the city of Sumgait on the list of polluted cities.

"We all know that during the Soviet period, Sumgait city and the adjacent Caspian Sea shores were 'one' issue, but now it is another," the minister said.
