Head of the OSCE election observation mission in Azerbaijan, Doris Barnett has refuted the recent media reports, which distorted her estimation of the October 9 presidential elections in Azerbaijan.

"I have no words in connection with the falsification of facts and shameless attributing to me the exact opposite of what I've said," Barnett said. "I'll write about it to representative of the demonstrators, who came from Mainz."

She made this statement while responding to request of the Azerbaijani embassy in Germany about her thoughts voiced on her behalf and published on the web-page of the Baku-based Azadliq newspaper, the Azerbaijani embassy in Germany reported on October 21.

Earlier, an article titled "German MP forced to answer for appraisal of election" was published on the website of the Azadliq newspaper on October 18. The article reported on the protest, held by a group of Azerbaijanis in Ludwigshafen in front of the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party, whose member is Doris Barnett.

The article claimed that the protest was held in connection with Barnett's statement on the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, in which she said that elections were organized at a high level. Barnett allegedly said her words sounded at a meeting with protesters were misrepresented.

Azerbaijan held presidential elections on October 9. The voting process took place at 5,192 polling stations under the surveillance of webcams, local and international observers. Ilham Aliyev, the candidate of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) party, won the presidential elections with 84.54 percent of votes (3,126,113 voters).
