Three killed in explosion at chemicals plant in Azeri city

Three people died and 10 others were injured after an explosion rocked a chemicals plant in Sumgayit, some 30 km north of the Azerbaijani capital Baku, on Monday, sparking a fire, officials said.

"On September 17 at 17:00 fire occurred in 6 fuel tanks at Domestic Appliances LLC and as a result of an explosion the fire spread to the surroundings," a joint statement by the emergency ministry and the state prosecutor's office said.

As a result of a preliminary investigation it was revealed that the cause of the blast in the fuel tanks of a privately-owned detergent plant was fire safety and labor protection violations during the welding of a fuel tank.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations and Sumgayit prosecutor's office employees as well as equipment, machinery and helicopters of the ministry immediately arrived at the site and took urgent measures to prevent spreading of the fire and to provide first aid to the injured people.

The Sumgayit prosecutor's office launched a criminal case on the articles of labor protection violation and fire safety violation of the Criminal Code.
