Azeri envoy, Hungarian official discuss officer’s extradition
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Hungary Vilayat Guliyev and State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Relations, co-chairman of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation Peter Szijjarto have discussed the extradition of Azerbaijani military officer Ramil Safarov, who had been convicted in Hungary.
Safarov was extradited to his home country last Friday and shortly thereafter he was pardoned by an order of President Ilham Aliyev.
The sides stressed that the issue was resolved in line with international law, Ambassador Vilayat Guliyev told Trend news agency Monday.
Safarov hails from Jabrayil, one of Azerbaijan's regions that are under Armenian occupation. Safarov, 35, who participated in NATO exercises in 2004 in Hungary, was charged with the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan, who insulted the Azerbaijani flag. A Budapest court sentenced Safarov to life imprisonment without the right to parole for 30 years.
Hungary's government condemned Azerbaijan on Sunday over the release of the military officer.
Moreover, Vilayat Guliyev was summoned to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, where State Secretary Zsolt Nemeth handed to him a protest note.
Earlier, the Head of the Department on Work with Law-Enforcement Agencies of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Fuad Alasgarov told local media that Safarov was pardoned in line with the Constitution and laws of Azerbaijan, and the European Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.
