Azeri may be taught in Iranian universities
Azerbaijani language classes may be taught in neighboring Iran’s universities for a semester during the academic year, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution, Mohammadreza Mokhber Dezfouli, has said.
Dezfouli said it was possible to teach Azerbaijani in local educational institutions over four months, and attendance will be voluntary.
"The teaching [of these classes] may be carried out only as part of the Supreme Council’s project. The classes must be overseen by the culture center for Persian language and literature," Dezfouli said.
The Council in 2009 developed a project on teaching languages other than Persian in Iranian universities. But the project, which envisions teaching Azeri, Kurdish, Turkman and Belujian, has not been implemented so far, though it has been discussed prior to each election in the country.
