Azerbaijan to chair regional group GUAM in 2012

Foreign ministers of GUAM, a group of four former Soviet republics, met on the sidelines of the OSCE Ministerial Council in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on Wednesday.

Participants passed a decision to transfer chairmanship in the organization from Moldova to Azerbaijan from next year.

The ministers of the GUAM member states, which also include Georgia and Ukraine, assessed Moldova’s activity as the group’s chair in 2011 and approved GUAM’s 2012 budget. They also discussed boosting GUAM’s cooperation with other international organizations.

GUAM was established in 1997 at the EU summit in Strasbourg. Uzbekistan joined the organization in 1999 but seceded four years later. During the organization's first summit in Kyiv in 2006, a decision was made to announce GUAM an international organization and rename it into the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM.
