Iran tried to stage coup in Azerbaijan: US sources
US secret service claimed that Iran has tried to stage an Islamic revolution in neighboring Azerbaijan, US online TV channel FOX 11 reported.
It alleged that two loud terrorist acts and one assassination were to be orchestrated in Azerbaijan in 2012, under a plot exposed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). These thoroughly planned acts aimed to cause public uproar and panic among the people, FOX 11 said on a program devoted to uncovering conspiracies of the agents of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps with the aid of Mexican drug dealers.
"The terrorist acts were supposed to be a kind of an incentive for public disturbances and outcry," the TV channel said. "Stability in the country was to be undermined. If the agents’ plans materialized, the head of state would have to cede his powers and resign."
FOX 11 said that an assassination in Azerbaijan was ordered by those close to the ayatollah-controlled regime in Iran.
"The leaders of the Iranian regime are confident that with Azerbaijan’s assistance, Israel is working hard to collect intelligence data against Iran," the broadcaster said. "It is common knowledge that Iran’s calls on its Azerbaijani ‘brethren’ to overthrow the incumbent authorities were to be the consequence of the terrorist acts in the country."
One of the figures reportedly implicated in inciting chaos in Azerbaijan is Hojatoleslam Ruhollah Bejani, secretary general of the Tabriz representation of Ansar-e-Hezbollah, Hezbollah’s Iranian arm.
"All this was to begin with mass protests outside the Azerbaijani general consulate in Tabriz," according to the FOX 11 program.
The plans to hold the protest were earlier reportedly announced by Bejani. He said protesters would condemn the alleged "anti-Islamic policy" pursued by the Azerbaijani government and halt the consulate’s activity. But Ansar-e-Hezbollah’s department for East Azerbaijan province later dismissed the reports on the protest planned in Tabriz, the capital of the province.
FOX 11 said the countries where assassinations were planned also included Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey and Iraq. In Turkey, an attempt on Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s life was reportedly to be made by March next year.
But footage of the advertised TV program suggests that Iran vehemently dismisses involvement in the plot.
"This whole story is a concoction of the US secret service aimed at Iran’s falling out with its neighbors and casting the Islamic republic in a bad light," Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted as saying in the TV announcement.
Iranian Ambassador Mahammad Bagir Bahrami has told IRNA news agency that fraternal relations between Iran and Azerbaijan cannot be adversely affected by any factor, according to the Iranian embassy in Baku.
Ambassador Bahrami said the United States and "international Zionists" are seeking to sow seeds of discord between Iran and other regional countries. "But they must know that relevant provocations and plans of world imperialism will have no effect," he added.
