Azeri clerical leader invites Obama to mosques
Azerbaijan’s clerical leader has invited US President Barack Obama to visit mosques to show an example of religious tolerance and diversity in his country.
"I have not seen Barack Obama come to a mosque so far," Caucasus Muslims Office chairman, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazada said while hosting California Senate members in Baku on Tuesday. "If Mr. Obama, just like visiting churches, goes to mosques once a year -- during the Kurban Holiday or Iftar meals -- and joins Muslims at those events, it would be a great example [to follow]."
Pashazada said Azerbaijani leaders equally treat all religions and, in addition to mosques, they attend events in churches and synagogues, which promotes the environment of religious tolerance in the country.
The clerical leader said Azerbaijan is home to people of numerous religions and cultures and is an example of tolerance and inter-religious dialog.
"There are currently no major problems in Azerbaijan between the state and religion, and minor issues are being solved through dialog," Pashazada said.
