Azerbaijan seeks Russia`s backing for UN SC non-permanent seat
BAKU – Azerbaijan hopes for Russia’s support in the elections for non-permanent seats at the UN Security Council that will be held in October, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told Interfax news agency.
The minister said he had discussed the issue with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
'We hope for the support of Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This support is very important," he said.
Mammadyarov noted that Azerbaijan first put forward its candidacy for the non-permanent UN SC seat in the mid-1990s.
"This year Azerbaijan is marking the 20th anniversary of its independence. We see ourselves as the regional leader. We feel support in international organizations and comprehension of Azerbaijan’s importance and role. In this regard, an attempt to be elected as a non-permanent member of the UN SC is a great experience. It once more confirms our independence and sovereignty and demonstrates that we can pursue an independent policy."
