U.S. sees Azerbaijan as a key ally in WMD fight
BAKU – Azerbaijan and the United States maintain strategic partnership ties in countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, a Pentagon official told reporters in Baku Wednesday.
Ronnie Faircloth, an official of Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), heads a US delegation on a visit to Azerbaijan taking place on the occasion of the completion of the joint program aiming to prevent the spread of WMDs.
The program, being implemented by the US Department of Defense and Azerbaijan’s State Border Service, aims to join effort to expose and fight smuggling of nuclear and radioactive substances in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea.
Faircloth noted that no country in the world is insured against catastrophes and such catastrophes "know no limits".
"From this point of view, the United States considers Azerbaijan a key ally in preventing the proliferation of WMDs in the region and the whole world," Faircloth said, voicing hope that this cooperation would be continued.
As part of the mentioned program, implemented since 2004, Azerbaijan has carried out missions at sea, while the U.S. has provided technical assistance and conducted trainings.
