Azerbaijan, Turkey plan to open consulates in Karbala
BAKU – Azerbaijan and Turkey plan to open consulates in Karbala and have asked the Iraqi city’s authorities for authorization, a Karbala governorship official has said.
"One of the goals of opening the consulates is to oversee pilgrims [coming here] from the two countries," Muhammad Mousavi was quoted by Iraqi media as saying.
He said the local government was now expecting relevant legal and diplomatic procedures to be completed.
Mousavi said Karbala hosts only the consulate of Iran, which opened in 2010.
