EU may keep South Caucasus envoy post, its official says

BAKU – The position of EU special representative for South Caucasus is likely to be maintained, head of the EU delegation to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia said.

"The issue of appointing the EU representative remains on the agenda," he told journalists Thursday. "There is every chance that this position will be maintained."

EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby’s mission ended in late February.

EU Foreign Affairs Chief Catherine Ashton offered last year to abolish the position of the EU representative in several regions, including the South Caucasus and Moldova. According to the proposal, the position would be combined with the post of the representative of the European External Action Service.

"Whatever the final decision is, it will not affect the EU's involvement in the South Caucasus region," Kobia said. "This is just an organizational issue."

He said the post of EU special envoy has already been abolished in many regions representing a high interest for the EU, such as the Middle East.

"This does not signal our waning interest, but just means that the EU is developing a different approach," Kobia added.
