17 years since Azeri-Armenian ceasefire

BAKU – 17 years have passed since Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire following a brutal war, but the Nagorno Karabakh conflict remains unresolved despite numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered talks.

The signing of the Bishkek protocol on May 12, 1994 took place in conclusion of the talks brokered by Russia, which chaired the CIS parliamentary assembly at the time.

Since then, regular monitoring has been held on the contact line of the two countries’ troops under the auspices of the OSCE chairman’s special envoy. Nonetheless, ceasefire violations frequently occur on the frontline.

20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, including Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since the war. Peace talks, brokered by the United States, Russia and France through the OSCE Minsk Group, have been largely fruitless so far.
