Azerbaijan, Armenia stepping up ‘public diplomacy`
BAKU – A new visit by Azerbaijani and Armenian representatives to Azerbaijan’s occupied Nagorno Karabakh region is being planned with Russia’s mediation, Armenia Daily news website reported.
The visit by representatives of the two countries, which have been locked in conflict for two decades, will be paid as part of the "public diplomacy" efforts. The two delegations will be headed by Azerbaijani and Armenian Ambassadors to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu and Oleg Yesayan, while their make-up is not reported at this point.
Ambassador Bulbuloglu told the press earlier that new initiatives concerning "public diplomacy" with Armenia could be undertaken soon.
In the summer of 2007, a group of Azerbaijani and Armenian public figures led by Bulbuloglu and the Armenian envoy to Moscow visited Karabakh and both countries’ capitals, Baku and Yerevan, and held meetings there. This was followed by another such visit in 2009.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a brutal war that ended with the signing of a fragile cease-fire in 1994. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been occupied by Armenian armed forces since then. Peace talks, brokered by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, have largely accomplished no result so far.
