30 Azeris charged with graft this year - official
BAKU – 30 people have faced charges of corruption in Azerbaijan this year as a result of the government’s increased anti-graft combat, a law enforcement official said in parliament Friday.
Kamran Aliyev, who heads the Prosecutor-General's Office anti-corruption department, said further that 70 criminal cases are currently under investigation.
According to him, since the Department on Combat against Corruption was established in 2005, it has carried out preliminary investigations on 385 cases and criminal charges have been filed against 698 people.
Aliyev noted that the number of investigated cases has been increasing by the year.
He said the anti-graft department’s hotline has received 747 calls this year. The complaints mainly concerned social security, local bodies, education, law enforcement agencies and the private sector, Aliyev told the parliamentary sitting.
During Friday’s session the Azerbaijani parliament passed amendments to the Laws on Operational and Search Activity and On Prosecutor’s Office. The changes authorized the anti-corruption department to carry out searches and operations.
