Armenia hopes for decision on Karabakh at leaders` talks

YEREVAN – Armenian Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan has said passage of a decision on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict "should be expected" at Saturday’s talks between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Sochi, Russia.

"I am confident that the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents will make an effort to adopt some document and there will be progress at the Sochi meeting," Abrahamyan said.

He added that the Karabakh conflict is to be settled based on the principles of non-use of force, territorial integrity and self-determination of nations.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia's territorial claims. Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno Karabakh, since the two countries signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a brutal war that displaced up to a million Azerbaijanis.
