More angry anti-Iran protests in Baku

BAKU – Public ire over Iran’s interference with Azerbaijan’s affairs and anti-Azerbaijani television broadcasts shows no signs of abating, with more angry protests held in Baku on Wednesday.

Iranian officials have made statements defying Azerbaijan under the pretext of a ban on wearing headscarves introduced in Azerbaijani schools. Moreover, Iran is expanding its political and economic relations with Armenia, which occupies part of Azerbaijani territory.

A protest outside the Iranian embassy in Baku on Wednesday was joined by over 100 people, including representatives of the World Azerbaijanis Congress and a number of public organizations, as well as war veterans and students.

The pickets chanted slogans like "End to provocations against Azerbaijan", "Iran is a friend of Muslims’ foes" and "Stop aiding the invader".

The Iranian embassy’s staff did not accept the protesters’ statement.

The statement said that some circles in Iran, which is trying to present itself as a friendly nation for Azerbaijan, have been making statements defying international law and friendship ties under the pretext of protecting Islamic values.

Another protest outside the Iranian diplomatic mission was held by the opposition Azerbaijan National Democratic Party (Bozgurd). The pickets chanted "Shame on Persian chauvinism" and "Azerbaijan should be united, its center should be Tabriz".

The police dispersed participants of both protests and some detentions were reported.

Commenting on the protests, Iranian Ambassador in Baku Mahammad Bagir Bahrami said Iran’s goal was to unite nations instead of alienating them.

"We are working to strengthen bilateral relations between our nations and states," he said.
