Ruling party rules out replay of Tunisia, Egypt turmoil

BAKU – An official of the governing Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has ruled out a replay in Azerbaijan of the developments that have occurred in Tunisia and Egypt, saying that political stability reigns in the country.

YAP’s deputy chairman Ali Ahmadov said, however, that there are forces both in and outside the country that are opposed to stability in Azerbaijan, but they lack the means to disrupt it.

"They might have wishes to do so, but I would rather call this daydreaming. Azerbaijani citizens highly value the social and political stability in the country and are ready to fulfill their civil duty to protect it," Ahmadov told the press on Tuesday.

Deadly mass protests erupted in Tunisia last month, resulting in the toppling of the government last month. President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali stepped down after 23 years in power. Scores of people have been killed in the protests against poverty, corruption and political repression.

In Egypt, thousands of people took to the streets on January 25, demanding political and economic reform and resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, who has been in office for three decades. 150 people have been reportedly killed and over 4,000 others injured in the riots so far.
