Rights champion appeals to Ahmadinejad over Azeri inmates

BAKU – An Azerbaijani rights champion has asked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for authorization to monitor the country’s jails to enquire about ethnic Azerbaijani prisoners.

According to Elchin Behbudov, chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee Against Torture, in his letter, he had expressed concern over abuse, torture and killings suffered by ethnic Azerbaijanis in Iranian prisons, and asked to take action to prevent such cases.

"Three Azerbaijanis held in Iranian jails have died of torture. Despite their being citizens of Iran, they are Azerbaijanis, and we cannot turn a blind eye to this," Behbudov said.

The rights defender added that, if granted permission, he will conduct monitoring in several Iranian prisons where the Azerbaijanis are serving their sentences and meet with the detainees.
