Major pipeline to improve water supply in Baku
BAKU – A pipeline laid from Azerbaijan’s northeastern regions to Baku was opened on Tuesday to improve water supply in the capital.
President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the Oguz-Gabala-Baku pipeline, which will supply the city with drinking water.
President Aliyev said in his remarks that the pipeline will supply 75 percent of Baku’s population with pure water meeting World Health Organization (WHO) standards without interruptions.
The conduit was built under a project financed by the State Oil Fund, which holds Azerbaijan’s revenues from crude exports. Its groundbreaking was held in March 2007 in the Oguz region in a ceremony attended by President Aliyev.
The 262 km pipeline will provide water to five districts of Baku. The unused bulk of water will be pumped to the Jeyranbatan water reservoir.
