Clash among Armenian servicemen turns violent - report
Armenian soldiers serving in the occupied Azerbaijani territories
have clashed at a military unit, online publication Milaz.info said.
Armenian conscripts had refused to take up duty in the areas where ceasefire is violated the most. This prompted a skirmish among military men in the battalions located close to the Khojavand and Fuzuli districts. Over 10 servicemen including those originally from the occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region opened fire at one another, the report said.
The conscripts in the Armenian army have said they were already fed up with such clashes and issued warnings to their fellow servicemen via communications. They vowed not to defend Garabagh Armenians.
This comes after an attempt by several Armenian officers to flee from Garabagh through Iran was reportedly thwarted in the past days.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for over a decade. Peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but have brought little tangible result so far. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.
