Opposition party founder not to stand in parliament vote

5 October 2010 09:18 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – The founder of opposition Party of National Independence of Azerbaijan (PNIA), Etibar Mammadov, will not run for the parliamentary elections in November, the party’s spokesman said.

Ali Orujov said that Mammadov, the honorary PNIA leader, will soon disclose reasons for the decision himself.

According to Orujov, five PNIA hopefuls have been registered to stand in the November 7 vote. To date, only one member of the party has been declined registration by a constituency election commission due to similar signatures in his ballot papers.

Parliamentary elections are held in Azerbaijan by the majority of votes in 125 constituencies. Previous elections were held in November 2005.
