Concerns rise over drug smuggling via Azeri-Iranian border
BAKU - Ongoing attempts by armed smugglers to transport drugs through the Azerbaijan-Iran border have raised utter concerns in the region, Azerbaijani State Border Service chief Elchin Guliyev said Wednesday.
Commenting on the incident that occurred several days ago, Guliyev told reporters that a group of four border trespassers had clashed with frontier guards in the Yardimly region. One smuggler was killed and the attempt to deliver large quantities of narcotics to Azerbaijan was prevented.
The body of the armed smuggler has been handed over to his country. The weaponry and drugs he was carrying were impounded.
