Armenians searching ancient town in occupied land

7 August 2010 08:27 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU - Armenians are conducting excavations in the occupied areas of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district to search for the remains of Tigranakert that they describe as "an ancient Armenian town".

Archaeologist Hamlet Petrosyan, head of the scientific expedition, claimed valuable finds have been made during the excavations, Armenia Today news agency reported. The excavations have been carried out since 2005.

According to Armenian claims, the foundation of Tigranakert was laid by Armenian Czar Tigran the Great in the 1st century b.c.e in present-day Karabakh, an Azeri region under Armenian occupation.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. Armenian armed forces occupy 20 percent of Azerbaijan including the Nagorno Karabakh region. Most of the territory around Nagorno Karabakh, including the central part of Aghdam, was invaded in 1993. However, ten villages of the district are currently under Azerbaijani control.
