68 pct of cars in Azerbaijan below European standards
650,000 out of 950,000 vehicles registered by the police in
Azerbaijan, or 68.4 percent, are incompliant with the Euro 2
environmental standard, a department head at the Main State Traffic
Police Department says.
Vahid Aliyev told a conference dedicated to a transition to European fuel standards that most of those vehicles were made between 1960 and 1990.
Aliyev noted that most of the cars in Europe and developed countries, made since 1996, comply with the Euro 2 requirements. However, the vehicles imported from CIS states are incompliant.
According to the traffic police department official, the capital, Baku, accounts for 67 percent of the harmful substances emitted into the air by automobiles in Azerbaijan in 2009. The figure is two percent below the 2008 level.
Since July 1, the Euro 2 standard is to be applied to vehicles imported to Azerbaijan.
Aliyev also said the number of cars used in the country has quadrupled since 1988 and doubled in the past five years.*
