Baku mayor’s office offers new venues for protests
The executive authorities of Baku have compiled a list of new
venues for holding public protests, according to Bilge Cankorel,
head of the OSCE Office in Baku.
Cankorel told the press that the list had been submitted to him a few days ago during a meeting with the Mayor of Baku Hajibala Abutalibov.
The mayor’s office deemed eleven locations in the Azerbaijani capital as suitable for public actions. Opposition parties are refusing to hold protests there, charging that those venues are located far from the city center.
Cankorel said the new list does not include some locations that had previously caused differences, but, instead, new venues have been added to it.
He noted that the OSCE Office will continue holding discussions on the issue with city officials.
"There are a number of complaints over the right to freedom of assembly. This issue should be thoroughly scrutinized. The head of the Executive Authority has his own approach, while the opposition has its own stance on the matter. Open and specific procedures should be applied here that would preclude any subjective reasoning on anyone’s part. I think the sides will be able to reach understanding."*
