European court upholds mass killer’s plea
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld a plea against Azerbaijan on Thursday.
According to the ECHR website, the rights of Shaig Garayev, a citizen of Uzbekistan, who is being held in Azerbaijan on charges of killing six persons, had been violated. The court ruling ordered a 16,000 euros compensation, to be paid by the Azerbaijani government for the alleged moral damages inflicted to him, as well as 2,500 euros in trial expenses.
Garayev, 29, was arrested in Baku in April 2008 for the purpose of a further extradition to his home country and has been kept in pre-trial detention. He maintained in his lawsuit filed to the European court that the European convention’s provisions on degrading and inhumane treatment and his right to proper legal counsel had been infringed upon.*
