Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi has sent a letter to Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev congratulating his country on May 28, the
Day of Republic.
Al-Gaddafi wished strong health to President Aliyev and development and prosperity to the Azerbaijani people.
The People’s Republic of Azerbaijan, the first-ever secular democratic republic in the world with Islamic population, was established on May 28, 1918. The republic that existed for only 23 months collapsed due to the invasion of Azerbaijan by Soviet Russia in April 1920. Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.*
