Caspian region stability hinges on Azerbaijan’s leadership: French senator
A French Senate member visiting Baku has said stability in the Caspian region requires Azerbaijan’s being a regional leader.
"Azerbaijan is a stable country, but it is located in a dangerous region. It is necessary to achieve Azerbaijan’s regional leadership to ensure stability in the Caspian region," Nathalie Goulet said while addressing the Strategic Research Center under the Azerbaijani President on Wednesday.
In her report, "Azerbaijan as a stable Caucasus and Middle East country", she also noted that it is pivotal to boost cooperation within the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to promote stability in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region.
"Azerbaijan can be active at NATO PA without NATO membership. These two entities – NATO and NATO PA – are not inter-linked," Goulet said, adding that, likewise, the country can be part of Europe without acceding to the European Union.
Further, Goulet positively assessed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s active diplomacy, saying it was important to maintain the country’s current image on the world stage.
During the debates, participants also touched upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. Vafa Guluzada, an Azerbaijani former state adviser and political analyst, accused Western diplomats of adhering to double standards on Garabagh settlement and supporting Armenia’s policy.
Goulet also condemned the biased policies, adding that, unfortunately, double standards are the reality of present-day and Azerbaijan is not the only party affected by this approach.
She added, however, that French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s hosting the Armenian leader at his home does not mean that Sarkozy will sacrifice the principles embraced by the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process.*
