Three Azeri soldiers killed in Armenian ceasefire breach
Three Azerbaijani soldiers were killed and another was wounded on Thursday after Armenian armed forces breached ceasefire on the contact line between the two countries’ troops, said Azerbaijan Defense Ministry spokesman Eldar Sabiroghlu.
According to him, the Armenian side sustained greater casualties. The ministry did not elaborate where the fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces took place.
News agencies reported earlier in the day that Armenian forces shelled Azerbaijani positions in the Agdam, Terter, and Goranboy districts.
Najmaddin Sadykhov, the Azerbaijani armed forces’ chief-of-staff, told the Baku-based ANS TV channel that the Armenian military had stepped up its activity due to the military exercises conducted by the Azerbaijani troops.
The two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war, but 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent districts, has been under Armenian occupation since then. Over a decade of efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.*
