CoE urges Azeri gov’t to enforce court ruling on opposition leader
The Council of Europe Committee of Ministers has discussed progress
in enforcing the ruling issued by the European Court of Human
Rights over the torture allegedly sustained by the opposition
Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) leader Sardar Jalaloglu during
the post-election riots in October 2003, according to the ADP.
Participants claimed that the ruling is not being enforced, brought the problem to the attention of the Azerbaijani government and called for taking action to resolve it.
Following the European court’s ruling, the Nasimi district court of Baku reviewed Jalaloglu’s plea and sent the case to the prosecutor’s office for consideration. However, the prosecutor’s office has not taken steps to prosecute, identify or punish the culprits, the party maintained.*
