European court to probe Sarkisian’s involvement in Khojaly massacre
The European Court of Human Rights has sought evidence of Armenian
President Serzh Sarkisian’s involvement in the Khojaly massacre
committed by Armenians against Azeris in 1992. The probe was
launched in response to a motion filed by the Turkey-based
Organization for Fighting against Baseless Armenian Allegations
(ASIMDER), Turkish Hurriyet newspaper reported.
The European court said in reply to the plea that it had been admitted for consideration and relevant evidence is to be submitted by January 8, Goksel Gulbey, the head of ASIMDER, told journalists.
"We were glad to receive a reply," said Gulbey. "The court now wants us to provide proof about Serzh Sarkisian [his involvement]. In addition to what we have at hand, we will ask for evidence available at Azerbaijan’s general consulate in Kars. We will appeal again with evidence and documents in the shortest time possible."
Gulbey said Sarkisian must be held accountable for the Khojaly massacre.
"We believe that the European Court of Human Rights will issue a fair ruling, as Serzh Sarkisian commanded the forces that perpetrated the massacre in 1992, and, having organized these troops, caused hundreds of deaths. In this period, over a million Azerbaijani citizens had to leave their homes," the union chairman said.
On February 25-26, 1992, Armenian forces attacked unarmed civilians in Khojaly with the support of the Russian troops. 613 people were brutally killed, while 1,275 taken captives, 487 became handicapped and 150 remain missing.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far. *
