Azeri detained in Iran over promoting foreign music: report
An Azerbaijani citizen has been arrested in Iran over promoting foreign music and culture in the neighboring country’s Ardabil province, Iranian IRNA news agency reported.
The detainee is a music teacher who had set up a musical band, the report said, without citing his name, when he was detained and his current condition.
Another Azerbaijani national, Rashid Aliyev, senior scholar of a laboratory at a physics scientific research institute, is held behind bars in Iran. In 2006-2008, Aliyev worked for the country’s Sazan Electronics Industry Company and returned to Azerbaijan upon expiry of his employment contract. However, the company’s executives insisted that the scientist stay in Iran permanently and continue working for the company. After these calls, Aliyev paid a short visit to Iran early in October. A day after his arrival, the police detained him, claiming visa-related irregularities. Media reports have circulated that Aliyev had been apprehended by the Iranian secret service.
The Iranian Ambassador in Baku, Mahammad Bagir Bahrami, told a press conference Monday that he was unaware of the reasons of the Azerbaijani scholar’s arrest.*
