Israeli-Iranian tension at Baku event
Israeli and Iranian diplomats created tensions at a conference, "Barack Obama`s policy on Iran", held in Baku on Friday.
Arthur Lenk, the Israeli ambassador to Azerbaijan, criticized Iran`s nuclear program during his address. He noted that the implementation of nuclear activities by Tehran should definitely be prevented, as the country`s possessing atomic weapons would create serious problems both for Israel and other countries.
Ali Aghajani, first deputy of the Iranian ambassador in Baku, walked out of the conference hall in protest of the Israeli statement.
The conference, organized by Azerbaijan`s Strategic Research Center under the President, was also attended by political analysts. The keynote address was delivered by US expert Jerrold Green.
Green, who heads the Pacific Council on International Policy, said the current US administration differs from the previous one and exercises a more philosophical approach to the Iranian issue. He emphasized that President Obama places a particular emphasis on the development of relations with eastern states.
"I believe that Obama has a true intent to mend ties with Iran," Green said. "Everything depends on Iran`s will. If it, indeed, wants to cooperate with the United States, this will happen."
Green noted that the U.S. is concerned over Tehran`s nuclear program. "Though Iran says the program aims to create alternate sources of energy, the US and European worries are still there."
