Baku comments on Tehran`s move following Israeli leader`s visit
An Azerbaijani official has reasserted that the foreign policy course pursued by Baku does not harm any other country, in a statement that follows Iranian reports suggesting the Israeli president`s recent visit to Baku had triggered diplomatic tensions.
The statement was made by Novruz Mammadov, the head of the Azerbaijan Presidential Administration international relations department, who was commenting on the recall of the Iranian Ambassador in Baku, Mahammad Bagir Bahrami, for consultations. The move was reportedly due to Iran`s displeasure following Israeli President Shimon Peres` visit to Baku June 28-29.
Mammadov noted, however, that he was unaware of why the diplomat was recalled to Tehran.
The presidential official believes that Azerbaijan is pursuing its foreign policy and this has no bearing on any other state.
"So far, the relations we have forged with countries have not brought any harm to any other state. At the same time, Azerbaijan does not interfere with the affairs of other states. This principle must be protected in international relations," Mammadov said.
Reports about the ambassador`s recall for consultations were circulated by Iranian media a day after the Israeli president`s visit to Baku. The ISNA news agency reported that the envoy was recalled to Tehran after Peres` visit to Azerbaijan and "threats" which it said the Israeli ambassador in Baku had voiced against Iran.
Iran does not recognize Israel, which it refers to as the "Zionist regime." Israel has not ruled out military action if diplomatic efforts fail to resolve Tehran`s nuclear row with the West. Tehran, however, says its nuclear activities are peaceful.
