Azeri territory to be used for civilian shipments to Afghanistan

11 March 2009 05:11 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijan`s territory will be used for the delivery of civilian cargoes to Afghanistan, the spokesman for the US embassy in Baku, Terry Davidson, said Tuesday.
"We are talking about the supplies of water, food and construction materials. Arms deliveries are not implied," he said.
The Azerbaijani capital is hosting a two-day conference on issues regarding ways of facilitating the logistical supplies of the US armed forces, NATO and its partner states involved in supporting peace in Afghanistan. The event, organized by the US European command, is attended by Turkish, Georgian and Azerbaijani specialists in the area of transport. It mainly aims to improve coordination among regional experts and the military partners of the United States on logistics-related issues.
According to Davidson, such cooperation would benefit both Azerbaijani businessmen and local producers.
He added that transporting goods to Afghanistan is envisioned not only through Azerbaijan but also via the territories of other states.
