Eight seized in 2007 over co-op with foreign secret services
Azerbaijani frontier guards detained eight persons suspected of
cooperating with foreign secret services in 2007, the State Border
Service chief Elchin Guliyev said.
710 individuals that had been wanted were nabbed by the frontier guards and handed over to law-enforcement agencies last year. The items impounded from the outlaws included nearly 3 million manats (some $3.6 million), 309 kg of drugs, 25 units of weaponry, and 211,554 bullets, Guliyev said.
3,332 people were detained on the border in 2007, including 413 trespassers. 32.4% of the violators were seized on Azerbaijan's border with Iran, while 29.8% - on that with Georgia. Smaller numbers of people were detained on the country's frontiers with Russia and Turkey. 26.2% of them were nabbed in airports.
The number of such violators dwindled 47% compared to 2005 and 13.1% compared to 2006.
The border service chief said that among foreign nationals violating state borders, the number of Iranian, Iraqi and Chinese citizens has increased.
He said that in seven cases armed resistance was shown to frontier guards. One border trespasser died in a skirmish last year.
A ship owned by Russia and four Iranian boats were detained in Azerbaijan's waters in 2007.
