UNESCO to host anniversaries of Azerbaijani writers

A list of the anniversariesto be celebrated in 2014-2015 was presented at the 37th session ofUNESCO General Conference held on November 20.

According to Charge d'Affaires of the permanent mission of Azerbaijan to UNESCOAnar Karimov, the list includes the celebrations of 100thanniversary of prominent writer and playwright Ilyas Afandiyev, 1100thanniversary of death of well-known Middle Ages scholar and thinker AhmadAl-Bardachi, and the 600th anniversary of "Ma-gasidal-Alhan" by Abdulgadir Maragayi to be jointly organized together withIran, Turkey and Tajikistan.

After restoration of its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has carried out thepolicy of cooperation with a number of significant international and regionalorganizations.

By joining the organization in 1992, Azerbaijan began to cooperate withUNESCO providing its member states with the opportunities to benefit fromassistance of high-level experts, technical aids, as well as the training ofscientific and pedagogical personnel and the participation in global scientificprojects.

UNESCOs' intangiblecultural heritage list includes the Novruz holiday, Azerbaijani mugham,Azerbaijani ashug art, Azerbaijani carpet and the music of Azerbaijani tar.
The main list of the UNESCOWorld Heritage sites in Azerbaijanincludes the Old City of Baku with ShirvanshahsPalace and Maiden Toweras well as the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape.

Furthermore, there is alsoa tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Azerbaijanwhich includes Lokbatan Mud Cone, Hirkan State Reserve, the Ordubad historicaland architectural reserve, Sheki Khan's Palace, Surakhani Ateshgah Temple, the Sushahistorical and architectural reserve, the mausoleum of Nakhchivan, etc.

The day-to-day operationalwork on the cooperation of Azerbaijanwith UNESCO is carried out by the Permanent Secretary of the NationalCommission within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bakuand by the Permanent Representation of Azerbaijan to UNESCO in Paris.
