Azerbaijan attends ICOM’s 23rd General Conference in Brazil

An Azerbaijani delegation has participated in the 23rd General Conference of the International Council of Museums (İCOM) in Brazil, AzerTag state news agency reported.

The conference took place in Rio de Janeiro, and was attended by 1,894 participants from 103 countries, including, for the first time, by the non-members of ICOM.

Prof. Dr Hans-Martin Hinz was elected to represent the International Council of Museums for a second term. A Doctor of Natural Sciences, Dr Hinz began his career as Advisor for the establishment of new museums for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in West Berlin, Germany.
In the next three years, he will chair the Executive Council made up of 14 other members.

The theme of ICOM-CC's session was "The 'value' of conservation in the 21st century". Conservation departments in museums, government ministries, and universities are everywhere under scrutiny by administrators seeking to cut costs by reducing, reorganizing, or completely eliminating them. This session focused on the value of conservation to society - how it is perceived and measured and how conservation professionals can influence on the public perception of conservation through their actions and through better communication.
