Commercialization of technologies is a priority for the development of innovations, Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s Intellectual Property Agency Kamran Imanov said at a seminar on “Issues of intellectual property protection in the development of innovations” organized as part of the “Innovation Week”.

He said that how the income is formed from the results of scientific research, the royalty from the use of intellectual property, as well as how research contracts are concluded, relate directly to intellectual property.

“Innovative development, intellectual property issues are related to the commercialization of technologies, and require a systematic solution to the problems of supporting innovations,” he added. “In world practice, accelerating commercialization and ensuring the development of innovations requires solving a number of important issues. First of all, attention should be paid to stimulating the development of start-ups and the possibility of using innovations by small and medium-sized enterprises. Another point is related to the acceleration of university cooperation with state and private companies of industrial sector, and this remains an urgent problem for universities.”

This is while at the university level, it is necessary to solve the issues affecting the copyright protection, by determining who owns the results of scientific research and how the royalty should be distributed, he said.

No less important issues are related to the emergence of companies providing commercialization of research results, he noted.

“It is necessary to define legal and regulatory approaches regarding the share distribution, identify the ways to stimulate commercialization, as well as methods of forming a partnership between the state and the private sector,” Imanov said.
